Auroral Oval

Plots on this picture show the current extent and position of the Auroral Oval at the north pole.

The red arrow in the plot, points toward the noon meridian.

Information

The statistical pattern depicting the auroral oval is appropriate to the auroral activity level determined from the power flux observed during the most recent polar satellite pass. The power fluxes in the statistical pattern are color coded on a scale from 0 to 10 ergs .cm-2.sec-1 according to the color bar on the right. The pattern has been oriented with respect to the underlying geographic map using the current universal time, updated every ten minutes.

Below is another source for Auroral Oval Data.

Information

The above Auroral Oval information is generated by CARISMA (Canadian Array for Realtime Investigations of Magnetic Activity). The CARISMA network is an array of magnetometers—devices that are used to measure disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field, caused by activity occurring in a region of space near the Earth, known as the magnetosphere. From these measurements, the nature of the event can be determined, and, by using a distributed array of magnetometers, more information can be calculated about their time and spatial evolution.
